PRESENTATION

Welcome to the fourth International Conference on the Analytic Element Method in modeling groundwater flow. The 2003 ICAEM will bring together the academic and engineer perspectives in modeling groundwater flow for environmental applications.

With the AEM's development in Europe, outside of its traditional American and Dutch craddles, this fourth installment will place a particular focus on this expansion and the connection of the AEM to other types of numerical groundwater modelling.

The goals of the conference are to :
- present current developments in groundwater modeling,
- present practical applications or open problems,
- provide an opportunity for the management of the environment.

Specific topics will include :
- modeling interface design,
- object oriented designs,
- mathematics for improvements of the AEM,
- regional/local models,
- upscaling and GIS,
- comparison of techniques,
- inverse modeling,
- 3D modeling,

with applications to :
- water resources management,
- transport of pollutants,
- case studies.

The fourth conference is encouraged the exposure of applications in environmental sciences including new fields of interest such as air pollution. The program will include four full days of presentation with three evening sessions and poster sessions.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

An extended abstract, of at least one but no more than two full pages, should reach the organizing Committee no later than September 3rd 2003. Abstracts must show the full title of the paper, names and affiliations of all authors, e-mail address and full mailing address of the Leading Author, the requested destination (oral, poster). The abstract must clearly describe the content of the presentation and its basis (preliminary research data, detailed case study, discussion of experience from practice, review of literature, etc.).

The official language of the Conference will be English. All paper must be written and presented in English. Authors will be expected to attend the conference and present their papers themselves. Papers will be selected following abstracts evaluation by an international panel of reviewers. Acceptance of abstract will be communicated to the Leading Authors by mid-September 2003.

Full papers (maximum 12 pages in length) should be addressed to the organizing Committee and be received no later than October 3rd 2003. All papers accepted for presentation at the Conference will be published in Proceedings available at start of the symposium.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Ecole des Mines of Saint-Etienne, the only Graduate Engineering School of the Ministry of Industry in the Rhône-Alpes Region has a long tradition of fundamental research and development. Our scientific priorities are gathered around the central theme of mathematical modeling, and are organized along 4 strategic axes of development : Industrial and Process Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Materials Science Engineering.

In the Sciences, Information and Technologies for the Environment Center research is geared towards Industrial Environment, mainly organised around the following fields : water resources management ; treatment, recycling and valorization of wastes ; soil pollution characterization and cleanup ; wastewater treatment ; analysis of natural or industrial risk ; environmental management.

For the fulfillment of its research goals, the center develops its competences in : hydrology and hydrogeology ; monitoring, supervision and assistance in management of eco-processes ; environmental diagnosis of industrial processes ; environmental information systems (industrial, territorial, geographic) ; educational simulators of the management of environmental projects.
