In the south of Provence lies Gardanne, 10 km from Aix-en-Provence, an outstanding student town, and just a short hop from Marseille, an attractive bubbling metropolis. Perched on the south-east slope of Captivel hill and looking towards Mount Saint Victoire, the town is dominated by the old centre of Gardanne.
Once a mining town, Gardanne has today an urban landscape marked by its hundred year industrial history. The town has however succeeded in conserving a charming, picturesque old town as part of the wealth of its heritage.
As you stroll through Gardanne you'll discover delightful little squares full of flowers, old fountains worthy of those in the most beautiful villages of Provence, an old mill... |

A tribute to Cézanne
Of all his works, Gardanne was the only village that Cézanne painted. He stayed there from 1885 to 1886 and left behind him this almost impressionist atmosphere.
