École Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Saint-Étienne (ENSMSE): a graduate school for science and technology

The Ecole nationale supérieure des Mines of Saint Etienne is one of the French "Grandes Ecoles" dedicated to training highly qualified engineers and to carrying out research to meet the needs of industry. Its mission is to support the development of its students and of companies through a range of courses and fields of research, from the initial training of generalist engineers " ingénieurs civils des mines", to PhD teaching ; from material sciences to micro-electronics via process engineering, the environment, civil engineering, computer science and health engineering. The school's expertise is based on teaching that is both academic and directly related to the real world of the companies, and is supported by innovative pedagogy. The school's pioneering spirit is seen in its exploration of new scientific themes or international partnerships which make it a unique player among the top 10 French engineering schools.

In June 2004, its 6th and latest center specializing in the unusual alliance between engineering and health saw light of day.
In January 2008, l'Ecole nationale supérieure des mines de Saint-Etienne inaugurated new facilities in Gardanne, near Marseilles, which house its 5th center created in 2002 and dedicated to microelectronics.

These 2 areas of development, concentrating on synergies between the industrial world and research demonstrate the School's ability to consolidate its lead, its determination to meet the needs of all its clients and to focus on the demands of globalization.

Our fields of competences in education/research

Although the ENSM.SE originally specialised in the field of metallurgical research, a domain which remains one of its core research interests (operating one of the few high-purity alloy research laboratories in the world), the School has broadened its remit to include:
- materials science and structures (SMS),
- natural and industrial processes (SPIN),
- sciences, information and technology for the environment (SITE),
- industrial engineering and information science (G2I),
- microelectronics (CMP-GC),
- health science and engineering (CIS).

These high-tech research sectors are operated by a team of around one hundred professor-researchers, who, with the help of doctoral students, introduce young student-engineers to their particular spheres of knowledge.
