2nd August 1816:  Royal decree issued by Louis XVIII for the creation of a mining school at Saint-Étienne.
1831:  Royal decree recognising the status of engineering school.
1882:  The School obtains the title of "École nationale supérieure des mines de Saint-Étienne".
the 1970s:  Computer science taught for first time: the School is a pioneer !
1991:  The School , now a national establishment under State administration , is attached to the Department of Industry.
1993:  First double diploma agreement with the Technical University of Berlin.
2002:  Creation of a 5th teaching and research department: Georges Charpak Center for Microelectronics in Provence.
2003:  Launch of a Graduate School (Masters and PhD) with l'École des mines de Nancy.
2004:  Creation of a 6th teaching and research department: Department of Health Science and Engineering.
2006:  The school is ranked 4th at national level by "Challenges" magazine.
Signature of the school's 10th double degree agreement with Seoul National University (South Korea)
2008:

The Ecole nationale supérieure des mines of Saint-Etienne has long maintained numerous and regular contact with the world of industry. This close participation by companies in the teaching, pedagogy and research has ensured that our training meets the demands of the market place.

The aim of the participation by our company partners is to help the students define their professional project, to identify the skills they will need and to choose the appropriate training programs.
This partnership takes a variety of forms
- a taking part in the teaching activities
- constructing a professional project : presenting professions and career prospects, offers of company assignments
- company gaines, business games, mock interviews, case studies
- series of theme based conférences "the consultancy and auditing professions", company forum.
- industrial placements.

To use an example, the Industrial Engineering and Computer Science Department has created a circle of partners around its industrial engineering training activities. It brings together former students ut Dior, Louis Vuitton, Michelin, L'Oréal, Finmatica, Intentia, and is aimed ut strengthening the presence of the industrial world in validating programs and assessing students and their career path. Similar initiatives are carried out by the other departments.
