A Tale of Two Companies

The two in question are Simade Robotics and Spindroid. Simade is the older of the two, but it was not as successful as Spindroid in the beginning. Simade was created when JJ Giradot left Robosoft to start his own firm. It was a relatively small business consisting mainly of special order industrial robots and consulting work.
Spindroid raision d’etre was sex. It appeared on the business scene because there were a lot of erotic catalogs and stores advertising sex dolls and artifical women but none of these products was anywhere near the quality of their publicity. Spindroid’s pleasure units were an instant success.   They were almost too much of a success since they caught the eye of some of the major robotics manufacturers like Robosoft and Ford Robotics who copied Spindroid and moved into this market.  Still Spindroid was the original and held on to a large share of its business. One of the largest sectors for the sale of sexual androids for Spindroid was the prisons. Most of the prison administrators were only too happy to introduce pleasure units into their prisons. Sexdroids reduced sexual assaults amongst the inmates by over 70%. The prisoners were far easier to control. Though pleasure units were often damaged. One problem for the prison system was that the inmates once paroled were often eager to get back in. The percentage of ex-prisoners who committed a crime soon after their release began to rise dramatically.
The competition between Spindroid and Simade Robotics began when J.J. Giradot was called in to study this problem. Simade had just come out with a line of nurses and doctors for psychiatric hospitals.  It was easy to see that with a few modifications these androids would be perfect in the prisons. Since they were designed to be much stronger than normal with advanced programming in human psychology they were ideal for changing the behavior of the prisoners. For example a wife beater or sexual molester would be paired with a beautiful android who would attempt to change the criminal habits  of these men.
Simade’s behavior modifiers were the rage in all the prisons and Spindroid never was able to regain their place in this sector.
Still, in wasn’t all bad for Spindroid. It is suspected that they committed industrial espionage to compete with Simade Robotics. But what ever the case, they did develop an amazing group of androids.  But in attempting to reintroduce their product in the prisons they over produced these androids. These physically attractive models were well coached in human emotions and foibles. These were not the simple pleasure units that Spindroid was used to selling. The company had enormous difficulties marketing these new units.
In desperation Spindroid advertised them as an escort  service. As instruction for their droids they gave only simple commands like make make your dates love you. These were sophisticated androids. This simple command had great repercussions .  The androids did their best to please, intrigue, and fascinate those who rented them. It was almost the same story. Some one, male or female would rent one of the androids as companion for an evening and soon after would become a repeat customer. This usually results in a long term contract or even more often the client buying the unit that it originally rented. Surprisingly, These people, who rent the droids, are not unsuccessful or uneducated, it is more likely that the opposite is the case. It is the cream of society that is often the clients of Spindroid’s escort service.  By there own figures, Spindroid and their copiers have captured 20% of (as they call it) the market. This means that one out of five people have given up , at least temporary, trying to find a mate among the other humans. This percentage is higher the more educated or financially successful people are.
